The Sons of Maxwell Perkins: Letters of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and Their Editor
This is best guide I've found to managing difficult people, and managing them from a distance. I love how Max Perkins gave feedback — always asking what the intended audience would think, always asking what they should notice first. This tactic works almost a century on, when you want someone to change a particularly oblique graph in a PowerPoint deck.
